Speculation around MS Dhoni refuses to die down as the Indian Premier League 2026 approaches.
Despite retiring from international cricket years ago, the Chennai Super Kings icon continues to remain one of the most talked-about figures in the IPL.

Former India off-spinner R Ashwin has now added a fresh twist, suggesting that Dhoni could
bat at No.3 during the powerplay this season — a role rarely associated with the legendary finisher.

Dhoni Already Training Ahead of IPL 2026

At 44, Dhoni has already begun his preparations, starting net sessions in Ranchi nearly two months before the expected start of IPL 2026.
Having played six IPL seasons since his last international appearance in 2019, questions around his future and role within the Chennai Super Kings continue to surface.
With CSK strengthening their squad for the upcoming season, many believed Dhoni might transition into a non-playing role.
Ashwin, however, dismissed those claims, stating that Dhoni looks motivated, fit, and eager to make a significant on-field impact.

R Ashwin’s Take on Dhoni’s New Role

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that Dhoni may choose to influence matches early rather than arriving late as a finisher.
According to Ashwin, Dhoni’s recent training sessions suggest a more aggressive mindset.

“Dhoni looks set to play. He has already started practising and looks extremely fit.
It doesn’t look like he will bat at No.9. I feel he could come out at No.3 in the powerplay
and act as an enforcer,” Ashwin explained.

CSK’s Strong Batting Lineup for IPL 2026

Despite finishing at the bottom of the table last season, CSK appear well-equipped for a comeback.
Ashwin praised the franchise’s scouting and squad balance, highlighting a formidable batting unit.

The lineup includes experienced campaigners and exciting young talents such as Ruturaj Gaikwad,
Sanju Samson, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and emerging prospects like Ayush Mhatre.

Ashwin also pointed out the depth in the squad, stating that even totals beyond 200 could become difficult
for opposition teams to defend against CSK if momentum builds early in the tournament.

What Lies Ahead for MS Dhoni?

With Dhoni back in training and speculation around his batting position intensifying,
IPL 2026 promises to be another intriguing chapter in the CSK legend’s illustrious career.
Whether Dhoni bats at No.3 or returns to his trusted finisher role, fans can expect
yet another season filled with anticipation and excitement.
